Develop A Standard Process for Packing

I like to travel.  I also hate packing and unpacking.  And I truly despise carrying more luggage than is necessary.  Given these three factors I worked carefully to devise a strategy that would enable me to travel when and where I want with a minimum of hassles when dealing with luggage.  I looked over the selection of travel supplies and luggage available at The Container Store.  While I saw several that attracted me, I decided to calculate just how much I would need before making my selection.

First, I listed the items without which I could not survive.  These included such basic items as a toilet kit, shoes, two changes of clothing, and underwear.  I also added some personal necessities like my desire for writing and reading material, and other personal needs.  When finished I figured I could stretch out that load to last 3-4 days, and that it could successfully serve as a casual load that in a pinch might be used for casual dress.  My next step was to see how much space they required when tightly packed and stored.  To my surprise, they fit nicely in a travel bag barely larger than a large briefcase.  And I could even fit a laptop computer in without a struggle.  So now I knew I could fit my needs for a weekend into one large case that could be carried by hand with no excess effort.  So now it was time to pick out the best item for using on short trips.

This took me back to looking at the Groupon for The Container Store.  I identified several cases that were both attractive and useful.  But I finally opted for a bag that was flexible to best use the space in my small closets.  I chose one that could be rolled on the floor, carried by hand, or slung over my shoulder.    And I liked the fact that it could be folded up to take a minimum of space when it was empty, yet it could be packed with a large number of items without taking up an excessive amount of space.  It can fit in an overhead compartment, but is sturdy enough to survive the rough treatment of baggage claim.   My new travel bag will be a great companion on my future trips.
